Lessons Learned About Shifting to Remote Work in 2021
With the first month of the new year wrapping up, it can be an excellent time to reflect on the progress made. And for many of us, working remotely has turned into a staple of the workplace. Regardless of the pros and cons of such a situation, now is the perfect time to review the lessons we learned about shifting to remote work in 2021.
Employee Satisfaction and Wellness
With the shift to remote work, employees get better benefits in many situations. Reports of less stress, better eating habits, and overall mental wellness have increased. Though there are such significant considerations to account for in working remotely, many employees find better job satisfaction and freedom in the flexibility of remote work.
The Work-Life Balance Has Shifted
One of the less-than-stellar outcomes from shifting to remote work has been that work-life balance has tipped in favor of work. Because we are always home, it may also feel that we are always at work. And, with increased communication, boundaries concerning emails, phone calls, and meetings have become blurred. This has resulted in more employees feeling like they are always at the office or available for work.
We’re Nowhere Near Perfect
Taking a step back from both the positive and the negative, one thing we know is that remote work is unlikely to disappear as quickly as it appeared. So for better or worse, we are in this for the long haul. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying–now is the best time to conquer obstacles that come with remote work and continue to improve the working model.
Wherever you work or what the working model looks like, there are bound to be bright sides and not-so-bright sides. The biggest lesson that we have learned as a collective has been prioritizing health, both physical and mental health, and learning how to manage through difficult times.
Though we are still learning, and the chips are still falling, our lessons in shifting to remote work in 2021 are still fresh in our memories. Our task now is to take these lessons to make a more positive 2022 working model.
