TED Talks That Your Future Needs
Business owners, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and anyone else employed all have something in common—work-life balance. Or perhaps, to better rephrase, an ongoing struggle to balance work and everyday life. It’s better to attain knowledge from mentors and people who are experts in a field than to spend your life reinventing the wheel. So here are two TED Talks that your future needs:
Three rules for better work-life balance
Ashley Whillans
Work-life balance is something that frequently sounds like a myth. It’s very common to send emails from our phones or make a work phone call during non-work hours. This affects our personal lives and our businesses; it has been calculated that 32 days a year of productivity is lost when longer and more strenuous hours are worked. Whillans discusses smart strategies to protect our time; Do not see rest as an unproductive barrier. If you have time off– use it. Create clear boundaries; set up automated emails, set times in which you “log off ” and make your hours respected.
How to make work-life balance work
Nigel Marsh
Although it is easiest to balance your work-life when you have no work… it’s not very practical nor fulfilling. The real trouble is that Flexi-time and dress-down Friday only mask the core issue; thousands of people work long hours to buy things they do not need to impress people they do not like. This is something only we can fix. If you do not design your own life, then someone else will, and you may not like the results. Now, if you are reading this, it probably means you’ve gone on to pursue your passion which may include starting your own business or working remotely. Marsh advocates for making small changes in the right places. This will differ for every person. Some people want to work on their boundaries, increase their family time, and strengthen their minds and bodies. As we set these goals to balance our lives, we must be realistic with the boundaries and timeframes we set for our work and life schedules.
Setting boundaries and reasonable timeframes are recurring themes within these TED Talks. Whatever your business may be, it is best to avoid burnout and strenuous stress.
